Levels of Service
A level of service (LOS) is a commonly-used method to measure the operational effectiveness of intersections. The LOS of a particular movement, approach, or entire intersection is based on the length of time the motorist must, on average, wait before proceeding through the intersection. At signalized intersections, the LOS is determined by calculating the average delay per vehicle for all movements within the intersection and assigning corresponding letters (A to F) to each move and the intersection as a whole based on the calculated delay. LOS A provides virtually no delay while LOS F represents a failing condition or indicates that the intersections capacity has been exceeded.
