Traffic surveys at the county line of US 30 and PA 41 were conducted by the Delaware Valley Planning Commission during the summer of 2001. This is a summary of their findings concerning truck traffic.
PA 41
Traffic Volumes
- Heavy trucks (those with more than two axles) make up 20% of vehicular traffic.
Reasons for Using PA 41
- Responding to the question, "Why do you use this road?", 63% of truck drivers responded "saves time".
- The second highest response for truck drivers was "most direct" (21%).
- The lowest responses were "saves money", "only way" and "less congested", with combined totals of 15% of trucks.
Other Major Roads Taken
- Responding to the question "What is/are the major roads that you will take to reach your destination after this road?" about 20% of the total southbound truck drivers responded that U.S. 1 is the road they will use to reach their destination.
- Northbound truck traffic had a dominant response with U.S. 30 at 48% and PA 283 at 16% for about two-thirds of the total.
Vehicle Trip Length
- Trip lengths are 18.4 miles on average for trucks.
- Sixty-eight percent of commercial vehicle trips fall within 10-50 miles. Twenty-nine percent of truck trips are 10 miles and under in length.
PA 30
Traffic Volumes
- Heavy trucks (those with more than two axles) make up 11% of vehicular traffic.
Reasons for Using US 30
- Responding to the question, "Why do you use this road?" 55% of automobile drivers and 70% of truck drivers responded "saves time".
- The second highest response for automobile and truck drivers was "most direct" (34% and 15% respectively).
- Eleven percent of truck drivers also cited "saves money" as a reason for using U.S. 30.
Other Major Roads Taken
- Responding to the question "What is/are the major roads that you will take to reach your destination after this road?" 26% of the eastbound truck drivers responded that U.S. 202 would be the road they would use to reach their destination. Seventeen percent stated that I-76 would be used.
- Westbound truck drivers responded with PA 41 at 22% and I-81 at 12%, for about two-thirds of the total.
Vehicle Trip Length
- Trip lengths are 29.1 miles on average for trucks.
- Sixty-four percent of commercial vehicle trips fall within 10-50 miles. Twenty-four percent of truck trips are 10 miles and under in length.
