Project Needs

On US 30 today:

  • Agricultural products ship from Lancaster County to Philadelphia.

  • Freight moves between Harrisburg, Northern Delaware and Southern Jersey.

  • Building materials are delivered throughout the region.

  • Millions of tourists come into the area.

  • Thousands of area workers travel the road.

As a result, improvements are needed because of:

  • Congestion – existing and projected delays.

  • Safety – high crash and fatality rates.

  • Vehicle Conflicts – diverse and competing uses of the roadway.

Current Congestion

Between Lancaster and Gap, US 30 is congested because:

  • Three-lane highway that passes through a mixture of villages, rural areas, and strip commercial areas.

  • Growth in population, growing personal reliance on the automobile, and more shipments being made by trucks have led to an increased number of cars and trucks on the road.

  • During summer weekends, it can take 50% longer than normal to travel this stretch of roadway.

  • These conditions are expected to be dramatically worse in the year 2030.
