Comprehensive Cultural Resource Investigations are being completed.

A Reconnaissance Survey of historic structures has identified and inventoried properties worthy of further evaluation regarding their historic and/or architectural significance. Background research has been completed and historic contexts developed to provide guidelines for evaluating resources within the study area.

A Historic Resources Survey, building on the previous Reconnaissance Survey, is currently evaluating both rural and village historic districts as well as individual properties for eligibility for listing in the
National Register of Historic Places. Properties will be evaluated based upon the historic contexts developed for the project area: agriculture, community development, industry, transportation, and tourism. The National Register is the official list of the Nation’s significant cultural resources worthy of preservation.

Nearly 3,000 tax parcels were initially looked at. Of that number, many contain modern structures, are located within eligible or listed historic districts, or have been previously surveyed and evaluated for National Register eligibility. Consequently, approximately 1300 properties remained to be investigated and evaluated. For this effort, all resources that were constructed prior to 1954 are being investigated.

A team of highly qualified specialists in archaeology, historic architecture, and historic preservation is conducting this work. They have identified the following significant resources:

Future Steps

PennDOT, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the PHMC, and Consulting Parties have reviewed the Reconnaissance Survey and Historic Context Report and provided comments back to the consultant team. Once Pennsylvania Historic Resource Survey (PHRS) forms are completed and a Determination of Eligibility Report is produced later this fall, PennDOT, FHWA, and the following Consulting Parties will review them:

  • East Lampeter Township
  • Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster
  • Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society
  • Landis Valley Museum
  • Paradise Township
  • Paradise Township Citizens Committee
  • Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania
  • Rough and Tumble Engineers Historical Association
  • Salisbury Township
  • Strasburg Heritage Society
  • The Heritage Center Museum

Once the FHWA agrees on eligibility, the report will be submitted to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, which in Pennsylvania acts as the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) for review and concurrence.
