Background data and information on soils, topography and vegetation was gathered to determine possible wetland areas existing within the U.S. Route 30 study area. Sources for that information included the U.S. Fish and Wildlife National Wetlands Inventory, United States Geological Serivce (U.S.G.S.) Quadrangle Mapping, Soil Survey of Lancaster County, recent aerial photography and field reconnaissance.Eleven wetland areas have been verified within the study area and classified in accordance with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Classification System. Six are classified as ponds with little or no hydrophytic (a plant that grows in water or in soil too waterlogged for most plants to survive) vegetated fringes. The remaining wetlands are predominantly associated with project area streams.
